Chapter89 Interview

CH.89: If you were to categorise or describe the style of your artwork, what would it be and why?

EE: Edible but not edible.

CH.89: Where do you draw your inspiration from

EE: It really depends on what I am making the work for. Be it a functional piece or experimenting with a process. I generally get my best ideas late at night.

CH.89: Can you talk a little bit about what your creative thought process is like when starting a new project/ piece of artwork?

EE: I keep multiple sketchbooks that I fill with ideas, inspiration and sketches.

CH.89: Is there anything in particular that you would want people to take from your artwork?

EE: That it doesn’t need to be so serious.

CH.89: Can you talk a little bit about your lifestyle as an artist and what that is like?

EE: I am currently working part time on Monday and Tuesdays in the hospital teaching autistic young adults, and the rest of the week in the studio.

CH.89: When starting out an artistic task, do you think it is better to have a particular direction/set plan guiding your way? Or, is it better to act on impulse and go from there

EE: It really depends. The nature of my work makes it impossible to plan to the finest of details as certain things like temperature of the studio effect the final sculpture.

CH.89: What is one major lesson you’ve learned as an artist thus far?

EE: Not to be sensitive. Years ago at uni I would have crits that would shred me to pieces but now I think whatever, either you like it or don’t.

CH.89: Do you regard personal style & taste to be of highest importance?

EE: Absolutely

CH.89: What do you consider to be the hardest thing about being an artist?

EE: Chasing invoices.

CH.89: What is one thing you love about being an artist?

EE: That it is a constant way of expressing ideas. I can be laid in bed, think oh that will look good, wake up and make it the next day.

CH.89: Is there anyone in particular, any artist’s that inspire you in any way?

EE: My studio partner and best friend Jo Kitchen. An evening spent playing cards and drinking wine with her is more inspiring than my 5 years I spent in art school.

CH.89: Do you enjoy traveling? If so, do you have a favorite city?

EE: Yes, I love travelling my partner is on tour alot so I have the privilege of going out to meet him, I was in Japan last month, and going to Hawaii and LA in August.

CH.89: Do you have a favorite author or book?

EE: Red Dragon.

CH.89: Any future goals or plans for your artwork?

EE: Keep moving forward. I would love to branch out to America or somewhere other than the UK.

CH.89: What’s the last song you listened to?

EE: Christ Quake – Warren Schoenbright, I art directed their latest music video.
